18 Rules of Success - Part 1
I’ve found 18 Rules of Success in the journey of my life. So let me share them with you:
1. Get out and stay out of your comfort zone.
You know, whatever we say that we want to do, I believe nothing much happens significantly until we get out of our comfort zone. In someone’s mind we hear “But i’m concerned over security.” My response to that is “Security is for dead people.” Instead, learn to manage risk and empower yourself everyday.
2. Never, never, never ever give up
Let’s admit, nothing ever works for the first time it’s attempted, unless you’re really lucky. So just because what you’re doing doesn’t seem to be working, it doesn’t mean the end of it and it doesn’t mean it’s not working forever. It may just mean it might not work the current way you’re doing it. If everyone was doing it right, then you wouldn’t have an opportunity anymore, right?
3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer to success than you think you are.
There is a Chinese saying that I love, and it’s very true. It goes like this: “The temptation to quit is the greatest just before you are about to Succeed!” I think you’re only a step way to Success for those of you who are ready to quit.
4. Quantify the worst things that could happen
With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be.
Very seldom should the worst consequences be anywhere near “undefined consequences”. Always measure the size of the consequences, they are usually not as big as you think they are. My mentor used to tell me, “Well, if it doesn’t work at all, they can’t eat you up.”
5. Visualize and focus on what you want to have happen.
Remember that old saying, “As a man thinks, so shall he become.” ? Whatever you have in your life today is a manifestitation of your sub-conscious thoughts in the past. So whatever you wish to happen in the future, must first happen in your mind today. And keep those negative thoughts out of your mind, if not, you will be attracting those into your life. So start visualising your success today.
6. Take things a day at a time and give your best at it.
No matter how difficult your present situation is or how cloudy the future looks, you can get through whatever you’re facing if you just focus on doing what you need to to do today. Just like when you’re swimming, if you want to reach the other end of the pool, all we need to do is focus on our doing the right strokes and breathing in and out at the right time. The next thing you know, you’re almost there. So live each day with passion and give it your best.
7. Always be moving forward and snowball it.
Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop doing something new. The moment you stop improving yourself, you are in limbo. The moment any organisation stops improving, it simply dies. Remember the Japanese concept of Kaizen which means “continuous improvement”. The small daily improvements we do will eventually result in a huge impact one day.
8. Be quick to decide and move quickly.
Remember what General George S. Patton said, “A good plan violently executed right now is far away better than a plan executed next week.” Be decisive and take action immediately.
